RNA BINDING FLUOROCHROME: FLUORO NISSL GREEN
UCLA Technology Available For Licensing

An efficient chemical synthesis has been developed for a new low molecular weight compound, Fluoro Nissl Green, which selectively binds RNA in vitro and in vivo in the presence of DNA. The compound is highly fluorescent with an emission at 510 nm and it has been purified and well characterized. Unlike other known RNA-binding compounds, it does not significantly bind to DNA. Unlike antibodies or oligonucleotide sequences targeted for detection of nucleic acids, it is inexpensive to prepare, stable to hydrolysis and is not limited by sequence specificity.

Potential uses for Fluoro Nissl Green and related derivatives are in the areas of cancer diagnosis (specifically astrocytic neoplasia), fluorescent activated cell sorting as well as RNA labeling, targeting, separation and quantization.
