BLOOD TEST THAT PREDICTS GOOD PROGNOSIS IN AIDS
UCLA Technology Available For Licensing

Protective immunity mediated by CD8 T cells is believed to play an important role in the outcome of human immunodeficiency type I (HIV) disease. UCLA researchers have identified and quantified by flow cytometry a specific subpopulation of CD8 T cells whose levels, when analyzed by the method of the invention, appear to predict the future course of disease in HIV-infected individuals. A two-year longitudinal study was performed with homosexual men who seroconverted (developed antibodies to HIV) during the course of the study. Significant elevation of the T cell subset was observed in those subjects whose disease progressed slowly (n=10; mean follow-up 64 months) but not in those whose disease progressed rapidly (n=6; mean 42 months).

Unlike other efforts in this area, this test is an indicator of favorable, rather than unfavorable, outcome in AIDS. Further, the results are based upon in vivo data from clinically significant, albeit small, patient groups collected over a long period of time, thereby enhancing the credibility and clinical reliability of the test.

The primary advantage of this blood test is the ability to identify which patients are likely to hold the HIV infection in check, with obvious consequences in terms of patient management and emotional well-being. In addition, the invention utilizes commercially available reagents and equipment and well-known laboratory procedures, namely, immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Thus, the invention may readily be commercialized as a kit for a diagnostic blood test that predicts good outcome in HIV-seropositive individuals. This test could also be useful as a research tool evaluating new drugs in a clinical trial.
